VA Double Dipping Law

Many Veterans have been caught off-guard by the VA double dipping law which is when a veteran receives separation pay, severance pay, or special separations benefits when they are discharged but down the road if they receive a VA disability rating, that veteran will not receive their monthly VA disability compensation pay until their separation pay at the time of discharge is fully paid back.

I was one of those veterans who fell in that boat. I received separation pay when I was discharged from the Marines but down the road I received a VA disability rating of 20% but quickly found out from my VA rep that I would not receive any of my disability compensation pay until my separation pay was fully paid back which took about three years to pay it back. I am just now starting to receive my monthly VA disability compensation pay. Sadly there are some veterans who received a larger separation pay when they were discharged in the case of one veteran I read about which it will take him close to 2030 to pay his separation pay back.

Are you a veteran that received separation pay unaware of the VA Double Dipping Law?

Our the current military service members serving aware of the VA Double Dipping Law?
